First week-Separation time

The first week is often the most anxious time of all the weeks leading up to and beyond the separation. Many anxious thoughts swirl in your head. You think to yourself: "Am I really going to be able to do this?" You know it was no fault of your own that you were let go. Friends try and fail to calm you of your anxieties by giving you advice. They don't know. How could they? They are not in your situation.

First thing you must do is breathe. You are the same as you were when you were employed. You have the same skills and abilities. The only difference is that no one is paying you for those skills and you haven't been able to use those abilities. Second thing you must do is take stock of what you have. This won't be easy. During this first week, your ability to function as a rational person sometimes falters. It's okay. There are many, unfortunately, that are feeling the same way you are now. This is especially true of those of us that are "seasoned" and have been let go for someone younger.

With this blog, every week I will post either my own experience or someone else's experience going through this period of unemployment. My hope is that this blog will be a source of encouragement and hope.
